A BETTER HINGHAM WITH BENHAM

Together We Can Do It

MEET JEN

Putting My Experience
to Work

I am excited to announce that I've entered the race for a seat on the Hingham School Committee. I'm running because I want to use my experience as an educator and a parent leader to help meet and set new goals for our school district and serve as a voice who represents the values and beliefs of our town.

A native of the South Shore, I have lived in Hingham with my husband, Frank, for thirteen years. We have three children - one each in elementary,  the middle and high school.

My mother was an educator and inspired me to become a special education teacher serving students with moderate and intensive special needs. In that role, I worked with students, parents and administrators. It was this experience that helped me to better learn how to listen, and to work collaboratively toward solutions that best meet student needs.

With a passion for education, I've channeled my efforts in a variety of roles at South School, Hingham Middle School and Hingham High School.

Since 2014, I've served on the Executive Committee of the South School PTO - two terms as Treasurer and I'm finishing my term as President. Since 2016, I have co-chaired the Get Smart About Art Program at South and have enjoyed co-teaching a series of in-class art workshops.

Last year, I was elected as a parent representative on the Middle School Council, and currently serve as a freshman Class Parent at Hingham High School. This is my fourth year on the PTO Board of Directors and I participated as one of three PTO representatives in the recent Hingham Superintendent search process.

Throughout my experience as a volunteer in the Hingham community, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from a diverse group of volunteers, students and educators, and community members.

I believe I can make a positive difference for all our citizens. I would appreciate your support and respectfully ask for your vote on June 27th*.

*Early voting and absentee ballots are also available.

HINGHAM

JOURNAL

EAST SCHOOL PTO

It’s been heartbreaking to witness the civil unrest and challenging times we are facing across the country and in surrounding communities with the crisis of racial injustice.

As a mother, I am committed to advocating for a quality education, removing the barriers of racism, and building a stronger race equity culture in our community.

As a candidate for Hingham School Committee, educational equity has been part of my platform since I entered this race. I am committed to acknowledging and addressing the impacts of systemic racism in our education system, and focused on creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment within Hingham Public Schools.

I believe we can proactively start to make a difference in Hingham in the following ways:

  • Updated district-wide reading lists for K-12 to include more black and POC authors and subject matter;

  • Additional opportunity for all students to engage and integrate with the METCO program during the school day;

  • Modify the curriculum to incorporate and teach black history throughout the school year in culturally responsible ways

As educational leaders in our community, we need to listen, learn, and represent best practices and implement new policies that support those goals.
